Q&A with Georgia Kanary Fountoulakis

… On Life and Work

Where are you from? Tell us a little about you.

I grew up in New York City in Washington Heights, when it was a Greek neighborhood. I earned a master’s in international affairs and a bachelor’s in political science at Columbia University, a master’s in business administration at New York University, and a doctorate in management at Colorado Technical University.

Tell us about your Greek roots.

My parents emigrated to the United States from Kalamoti, Chios.

Do you write full-time or do you have a “day” job? Tell us about it.

I am a professor at Colorado Technical University’s School of Business and Management, where I teach business strategy courses online. Currently, I write on a part-time basis.

What types of books do you like to read?

I like to read short stories and novels ranging from historical fiction to thrillers.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

My favorite author is F. Scott Fitzgerald and my favorite novel is Tender is The Night.

… On Writing

What inspires you?

Human rights issues inspire my writing.

When did you start writing?

I started writing when I was in eighth grade, but published my first novella, Kyril and Zoe on May 24, 2024.

Does your Greek heritage influence your work? If yes, how?

My Greek heritage influenced three of my five novellas and a short story.

What do you like to write?

I like to write historical fiction focused on human rights issues.

… On Your Books

Tell us about your first book. When did it come out?

My first book, a novella, is Kyril and Zoe (independently published, 2024). It takes place from 1452-1453 in Constantinople during its siege and fall where the Byzantine Empire, having shrunk to a shadow of its former glory is crumbling. When Kyril, a visionary and world-weary traveler meets Zoe, a nobleman’s daughter, the pair instantly falls in love. As the city prepares to face a massive Turkish army, Kyril and Zoe pursue an indescribable romance.

How many books have you published?

I have published five pieces of historical fiction: four novellas and one short story.

Tell us about your new book.

My latest novellas, published on December 7, in honor of Human Rights Day on December 10, are The Ottoman’s Assistant (independently published, 2024) and Love in Jasenovac (independently published, 2024). The latter is set in 1941 takes place in 1941 Jasenovac, Croatia.

Have you published anything else, i.e. poetry, short story, essay, etc.

I independently published a short story Themis and Adlee on July 20, 2024. This short story takes place in 1923. Two women go to a clinic in Crete to give birth to their first children, mirroring the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.

… On the Future

What’s next for you?

I am currently working on my first novel, which takes place from 1992-1993. It follows Armela, a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb, who has been married just over a year. When the Bosniaks attack Srebrenica in her native Bosnia, her husband Armin disappears underground.
